Form 1099-NEC is filed to report nonemployee compensation. It isn’t a replacement of Form 1099-MISC, it only replaces the use of Form 1099-MISC for reporting independent contractor payments of “Nonemployee Compensation”.
If a payer has made at least $600 as compensation to individual contractors, they must file Form 1099-NEC with the IRS and send copies of the form to recipients. The deadline to file Form 1099-NEC and send recipient copies is January 31st. For the 2020 tax year, the deadline is February 01, 2021.
When filling out Form 1099-NEC, below are the details required:
- Business’s name, address, and phone number
- Business’s TIN
- Recipient’s name, address, and TIN
- Total nonemployee compensation
- Federal and state income tax withheld
