Form 2290
The taxable gross weight is used to calculate the Heavy Vehicle Use Tax (HVUT) of a vehicle while filing Form 2290. The taxable gross weight of a vehicle is the sum of the following:
- The actual unloaded weight of a fully equipped vehicle.
- The actual unloaded weight of any trailers or semi-trailers that is fully equipped and is generally used in combination with the vehicle.
- The weight of the maximum load usually carried on the vehicle and the trailers or semi-trailers.
If the taxable gross weight of your vehicle is less than 55,000 pounds, you are not required to file Form 2290. The HVUT of your vehicle will increase if the taxable gross weight of your vehicle increases.
Vehicles that travel less than 5000 miles during the tax year (Suspended vehicles) are not required to pay the HVUT irrespective of their taxable gross weight. However, it is mandatory to file Form 2290 for the suspended vehicles.
