The IRS imposes penalties for the late filing of Form 2290 and HVUT payment. But, there are possibilities to get those penalties waived off.
If you’re filing Form 2290 for the first time and missed filing the return before the deadline, there is a high chance that the IRS may waive off your penalty. You just have to contact the IRS at (866) 699-4096 (Toll-free number).
If you’ve already filed Form 2290 without missing the deadline for at least 3 years and it’s the first time you’re missing the deadline, the IRS might consider waiving off your penalties.
You may also request the IRS to waive off your penalties even if you’ve missed the deadline for the second time, but you have to provide a reasonable explanation for late filing. Here are some reasons:
- Accidents or any natural disasters
- Death or severe illness of the family members
- Delay in check or money order reaching the IRS
- Inability to obtain any records
Whichever reason you choose, make sure it’s valid as you have to provide proof for the reason.
